Clearly, A. A. Milne is someone I need to get to know better.
Since my son's birth nearly 5 years ago, I've become well-aquainted with his Hundred Acre Wood writings, and I adore the original Pooh stories. The gentleness, love, and thoughtfulness which underlie them are characteristics that I wish for my son.
“Promise me you'll always remember: You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think." Christopher Robin to Pooh
And, I must give credit to Disney & Co--their adaptations and new stories are all carefully drawn from the original characters, even when they go fairly far afield. (Super Sleuths? Really?)
But the quote that follows tells me that there's more to Milne than I knew... and I want to get to know more about him and his other writing. If I do, I'll try to have something of interest to say.
"The third-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking with the majority. The second-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking with the minority. The first-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking." A. A. M.
The remarkable thing about becoming a parent is that you get to learn things from a childs perspective or maybe just remember them. The world would a better place if we could just remember them. This made me think of Seuss and a book called The Tao of Pooh. Wonderful stuff.
ReplyDeleteAs mine have aged, I still find those nuggets of wonder. His Dark Materials makes me think of this in respect to the wonderful descriptions of love...I fear the propaganda about this series overshadowed the wonder inside the pages (particularly the last book).
